Cyber security professionals are in high demand! Cyber security is an industry grew 18 percent from 2014 to 2024 and is expected to continue to grow. Cyber security jobs also pay a premium of non-security IT careers According to the US Department of Labor Statistics, the median salary for an Information Security Analyst in 2016 was $92,600 per year or $44.52 per hour.

Most cyber security related jobs require a bachelor’s degree and some experience, which may be self-taught is acceptable to the employer. One exception is the job of hacker, specifically white hat hacker. A white hat hacker (as opposed to a grey or black hat hacker) is also called an ethical hacker. They break into IT systems, with the permission of the owner, in order to find vulnerabilities and potential paths into data breaches. Ethical hackers can acquire jobs based on experience alone, including hack-a-thons and contests.

  1. Chief Information Security Officer – this is senior level job that requires IT experience as well as budgetary oversight
  2. Digital Forensics Analyst – this is an interesting career path where the IT professional tries to solve cyber crimes and determine what path the hackers took and what data they accessed
  3. White Hat Hacker – this type of hacker works with an IT system owner to find system vulnerabilities
  4. Network Security Engineer – this is an entry level IT career involves working on intranets and extranets to implement IT system changes, update systems and stay on top of vulnerabilities
  5. Information Security Analyst - plans and implements security measures to protect corporate computer networks and IT systems
